Blues fall at home to Schooners
The Blues were defeated by the Mystic Schooners 7-1.
The Blues fell 7-1 to the Mystic Schooners. The Blues' record is now 15-14 on the season.
The first run came in for the Schooners at the end of the top of the first. Casey Wensley (Bryant) advanced to third on a wild pitch, followed by a walk to Camden Righi (UCONN). Righi was caught stealing at second, allowing Wensley to score and put Mystic up 1-0. In the top of the second, Justin Silverstein (High Point) shut down the Schooners, pitching a three-up, three-down inning.
Top of the fourth, Mystic scored again after Justin Best (Manhattan) walked, advancing Joel Collado (University of Rhode Island) and Jaimie Zee (Notre Dame) to second and third and scoring Anthony Belisario. A walk to Gavin O'Brien (Northeastern) then scored Zee. To end the top of the fourth, Christian Butera (Brown) flied out to right field, advancing O'Brien and Best and scoring Collado, giving Mystic a 4-0 lead.
The Blues responded to the Schooners' runs with a run of their own, scored by Thomas Zwirecki (Rutgers). Scott Gell (Stony Brook) singled to right center, allowing Zwirecki to score and making it a three-run game.
The Schooners extended their lead after Zee singled to left center, scoring Belisario. This was followed by a strikeout by Jesse Specter (Shepard). Mystic further extended their lead to 6-1 in the top of the sixth after Wensley popped up to third, sending Best home.
Scout Updike (Jacksonville) came on the mound after Torin Kassebaum (Long Island) started the top of the seventh, recording his first strikeout, then his second. Updike began the eighth with back-to-back strikeouts. However, Mystic made it a seven-run game when Gabriel Natvidad reached first on an error, advanced to second, and scored Wensley.
Silverstein was a force to be reckoned with on the mound. He ended his time on the mound having allowed only two hits and four runs, and struck out five. Updike was also hot on the mound, allowing only one run and one hit, and striking out four. Jesse Specter, who followed Silverstein on the mound, allowed only two hits and one run. Specter also struck out one during his time on the mound. Jonas Aponick finished on the mound for the Blues against the Schooners, allowing only one hit and no runs, and struck out two to close out the game.
The Blues return to Muzzy on July 12 at 5 pm. to face the North Shore Navigators.
