Blues drop game against Westerners
After a neck-and-neck 10-inning game, the Blues fell to the Danbury Westerners 4-3.
Liam Diehl (Towson University) got things started on the mound for the Blues. Diehl allowed only seven hits and three runs and recorded five strikeouts against the Westerners.
The Westerners got off to a strong start in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead. However, at the top of the fourth, the Blues responded with a run by Chris DiPrima (Yale University) after Cal Chance (UMass Lowell) grounded out to second base, advancing Nick Francuzenko (Towson University) to second and giving DiPrima the chance to score.
Two innings later, DiPrima struck again, making it a one-run game, and Francuzenko quickly followed with a run, tying the score 3-3. DiPrima scored his second run of the night on a passed ball, and Francuzenko scored the Blues' third run of the night after Colin Crowley (Winthrop University) singled to right field.
Top of the seventh, it was anyone's game. The teams were neck-and-neck at 3-3 for three innings. Bottom of the tenth, Westerners' Ronan Donohue (Sacred Heart University) scored the team's fourth run of the night, sealing the win for Danbury.
The Blues' defense was on fire, and they were far from slowing down. The Blues shut down the Westerners' scoring for eight straight innings. Mason Glickman (University of New Haven) and Samuel Schmidt (Jacksonville State) both came onto the mound ready to go. Glickman allowed only one hit and recorded one strikeout. Schmidt kept the defense's momentum going, allowing only two hits and recording two strikeouts against the Westerners.
The Blues are staying on the road and will face the Martha's Vineyard Sharks at 7:05 on June 21. The Blues return home for Heart Disease Awareness Night against the Sanford Mainers on June 23, with first pitch set for 6:30.
